HOSTEL OPENING POSTPONED! 9/09 update: Hood River County will not allow us to open the hostel upstairs unless we meet handicap access laws, including an elevator and handicap bathrooms/showers. In addition, they will require us to install a commercial sprinkler system upstairs AND downstairs in the pub. Together, these items are cost prohibitive ($50k+), so we have delayed the hostel plans until further notice. Our apologies to our hiker friends and especially to the PCT thru hikers!! WHAT IS A HOSTEL? That's what lots of people ask us when they see our name. Hostels have been popular in Europe for decades, but the concept is still largely unfamiliar in the United States. Wikipedia explains, "Hostels (or youth hostels) provide short-term accommodation to travelers, particularly encouraging outdoor activities and cultural exchange for the young." Other online definitions include "an inexpensive accommodation, typically in dormitory style" and a "simple, temporary accommodation for hikers." |
